Get a Suica or Pasmo card at any station. They work on trains, buses, convenience stores, and vending machines across Japan. Saves fumbling with coins every time.

Always remove shoes when entering homes, ryokans, some restaurants, and temples. Look for a genkan (entryway) and slippers — it's one of the most important customs.

7-Eleven, Lawson, and FamilyMart aren't just shops — they're dining destinations. Onigiri, egg sandwiches, fresh bento, and surprisingly good coffee at a fraction of restaurant prices.

While cards are increasingly accepted, many smaller restaurants, shrines, and local shops are cash-only. Carry ¥10,000–20,000 and use 7-Eleven ATMs for international cards.

A 7-day Japan Rail Pass costs about ¥50,000. A Tokyo–Kyoto round trip on the Shinkansen alone is ~¥28,000. If you're making 2+ long-distance trips, the pass pays for itself.

Japanese queuing is an art form. Stand on the left on escalators (right in Osaka), line up at marked spots on train platforms, and never cut in line — even if it stretches around the block for ramen.

Unlike Western dining, slurping ramen and soba is encouraged — it shows appreciation and helps cool the noodles. Don't be shy, the louder the better in a busy ramen shop!

Most trains stop running around midnight. Miss the last train and you're looking at an expensive taxi ride or a manga cafe stay. Check last-train times on Google Maps or Jorudan.
